MBE Honour for Rev Alex Cairns
- 14 Jun 2026
The Presbytery of the South West is delighted to congratulate the Rev Alex Cairns, who has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the King’s Birthday Honours List.
Alex, a resident of Sandhead, received the MBE for services to the communities of South Scotland, particularly those in Wigtownshire.
At the age of 94, Alex has given a lifetime of service to the Church and to the wider community. He served faithfully as minister of different churches, including Leswalt and Ervie-Kirkcolm and, in the many years since his retirement, has continued to make an exceptional contribution to church and community life.
Alex remains actively involved in the life of Stoneykirk Parish Church, Sandhead, through Toskerton, the Fellowship Bible Study Group, the Guild, the Worship Team, the Wednesday Café and local fundraising. He has also supported many congregations across the area by providing pulpit supply.
His wider community involvement includes the Community Council, Sandhead Strollers, Ardwell Community Kirk, the local Christian Aid Committee and Stranraer Rotary.
Alex has given generously of his time, energy and experience, always serving others with warmth, enthusiasm and a wonderfully cheerful spirit.
The Presbytery of the South West offers Alex its warmest congratulations on this thoroughly deserved honour.
